Ptolemy, II,3,1 : Tarouedoun kai Orkas akros. ( = TARVEDUM SIVE ORCAS PROMONTORIUM), vars. Tarouedoume (= TARVEDUME), Tarouidoun ( TARVIDUM), Taroueda ( TARVEDA)

II, 3, 4: Tarouedoum (= TARVEDUM)

Marcian II, 45: Taroaidounou (gen. ; = TAROAEDUNUM) ? recte Tarouedounou (= TARVEDUNUM)

DERIVATION. Though none  of the Ptolemy MSS shows -dunum, Marcian preserves a form close to this, and the restoration is undoubtedly correct. On Ptolemy's spelling, see Chapter III, p. 133. On the first element, see Holder II, 1742 and GPN 261-63: British *taruo- `bull', now represented by Welsh tarw, Cornish tarow, Breton taro, tarv; and in Irish, tarb, cognate with Latin taurus. The corresponding Gaulish word occurs in such place-names as Tarvenna AI 3763, etc., > Thérouanne (Pas-de-Calais, France), Tarvessedum AI 2785 near Lake Como (N. Italy), and others perhaps assimilated to Latin taurus. For -dunum, see BRANODUNUM. The sense is thus `bull-fort', presumably named from the resemblance of the headland to a bull; Watson CPNS 36 mentions a similar name with elements reversed, Duntarvie in Lothian (Scotland), and points out that Thurso Bay, opposite Dunnet Head, is Norse Thjorsa `Bull's Water'. The name is given by Ptolemy as a contemporary alternative to the traditional Orcas.

IDENTIFICATION. Dunnet Head, Caithness. On the equation with Orcas, see p. 115.
