Note that here, and for Tarvedu(nu)m and Verubium, Ptolemy exceptionally transmits the termination as -um (not -on). See also the next entry.

DERIVATION. For Vir-, a latinised form of British *uer-, see VERLUCIO; for -vedrum, see VEDRA. If we apply Ekwall's etymology to the present name, it means something like 'very wet (cape)' or 'great wet (cape)', presumably with reference to waves crashing at its foot and sending up spray.
