DERIVATION. The name is British *magno- (plural *magnï), from which comes Welsh maen (pl. mein) 'stone, rock'. See Jackson in Britannia, I (1970), 76. Hamp in BBCS, XXVI (1974-76), 157, refînes on this by proposing that the British word was neuter *magnon, collective plural *magnia, which, in Latin locative plural guise (see ANICETIS) is naturally Magnis. The only Continental parallel seems to be Magno of TP, in Dalmatia; two places called Magnacum in Gaul are probably based on the Latin personal name Magnus.

IDENTIFICATION. The Roman town of Kenchester, Herefordshire (SO 4442); for its probable inclusion in the civitas Dobunnorum, see DOBUNNI.
