Étymologie : * ALF Rivet & C. Smith, p 452 : - Ptolémée, II,3,14 : Sketis nesos ( = Scetis Insula); variantes : Skitis ( = Scitis), ( = Okitis) (= Oktitis).. - Ravenna, 109,15 : Scetis. "DERIVATION. It is likely that Scitis is the better form; the name is twice written Scia in Adamnan's Life of St Columba (I,33 and II,26). Watson CPNS identified a Celtic root now represented by Gaelic sgian 'knife', sgiath 'wing', related to Latin scindo and Greek skizw 'I cut', and assigned a sense 'divided isle' to the name; the reference might be to the numerous deep indentations m its coast-line, or less probably to the two major 'constrictions' of its shape. There seem to be no other instances of the use of this root in toponymy".***** |
