Étymologie

- A) MEDIONEMETUM

* Rivet & Smith, p. 416-417 :

SOURCE
- Ravenna, 10754 : MEDIONEMETON

DERIVATION. For the first element, see MEDIOBOGDUM; for -nemetum, see AQUAE ARNEMETIAE. The sense is '(place) in the middle of the sacred grove', or since that seems unlikely for the site of a fort, 'middle grove', perhaps halfway along the length of the Antonine Wall (though there is no certainty that Ravenna is defining such a fort despite the heading of its section), or midway between two natural features.

IDENTIFICATION. From its position in the list next to Colanica (? Camelon - see COLANIA), it is tempting to identify this with the remarkable shrine of Arthur's O'on, Larbert, Stirlingshire (NS 8782), on which see K. A. Steer, Arch. J., cxv (1958), 99-110, and RCAHM Stirlingshire (Edinburgh, 1963), 35 and 118. As is there suggested, this may have been a tropaeum or victory monument associated with the campaigns of Antoninus Pius and so would be likely to achieve mention; its Celtic name could have been given by Roman auxiliaries. This seems preferable to the identification with the purely barbarian Cairnpapple suggested by S. Piggott, PSAS, LXXXII (1947-48), 118.

>>> "Comme il est suggéré, il se peut qu'il y aurait eu un trophée ou monument de victoire associée aux campagnes d'Antonin le Pieux dont il pourrait marquer le terme; son nom celtique pourrait lui avoir été donné par les auxiliaires romains". (trad. JCE)
