R&C think Ravenna's form probably a scribal error for Portu Abone, more classically Portum Abonae 'port of (or at) Avon'. This correction is daring but acceptable. The compiler of Ravenna or an early copyist has made up two reinterpretations of a name that had become unintelligible, assimilating the first element to Latin punctu 'point' and the second perhaps to Latin obice (obex, obicem) 'bar, bolt; barricade'. AI's form might represent a genitive with 'port' no longer expressed, or a locative in -ae.

DERIVATION. See the previous entry. Latin portus appears in several British names. As a common noun it passed from Vulgar Latin in Britain into Celtic speech (Welsh porth, Breton porz), and into Anglo-Saxon.
